Question:
I know about "nits" but exactly what else am I
supposed to be looking for (besides the "grains of rice")?
They do not look like grains of rice. More the size of the period at the
end of a senctence, light-colored (check the hair in very strong light)
and firmly glued to the hair close to the scalp.
Answer:
The lice *do* look like grains of rice with legs but the nits (the eggs) do
not.
Our neighborhood just got over having a problem with head lice and we were
included in that. When I first discovered that my son had head lice, he had
live lice and also alot of nits that looked ready to hatch. The nits on his
head were brown and were attached to the hair shaft, close to his scalp. When
I got head lice from my son, it was caught early and the nits were like a
translucent white and were attached to the hair shaft. They were very small!
The lice also tend to lay the eggs at night, about 5 to 10 a night. They tend
to lay them by the ears and at the nape of the neck. I found that to be true
but that doesn't mean they don't lay them other places, just that they tend to
be greater in those areas.
You should look on the web if you're interested in info on head lice. The one
thing I learned about head lice is that everyone has a different opinion on
them, including the health department.
