Medication for Head Lice ?

Question:
I just found out that I have head lice. I do not know how I got it, but I do not have any children or any associations with schools or daycares or other common routes. I was and still am COMPLETELY shocked...

Do you know what the most effective method for treatment is? I tried the Walgreens version of Rid (1%) but it didnt kill the lice. I am having a really hard time seeing any nits, but I suspect that they are there. I also purchased the Lice Meister metal comb and have been using that... this just started up 48 hours ago and I dont know what else to do. I have treated my house, washed everything in hot water then dried in dryer. Do you have any suggestions? Does prescription strength "rid" work better? I am leaving for vacation on Sunday and would really like to have this taken care of before then... is it possible?

Answer:
Lice and nits love to hide behind the ears. Look there. You must comb the dead nits out to get rid of them, however. They are a grey colour.

Why are you sure they are not gone? If you have followed all the instructions, you should be fine.

Lice medication is the same ingredient (although perhaps not the same strength) as flea shampoo (pyrethins)---an insecticide. More is not always better, and could (in large amounts) be toxic.

As a nursing student, if i was faced with truly RESISTANT head lice, my next step would be to get help and advice from the local Health Unit.
