Question:
How can I do with mayonnaise to get rid of head lice?
Answer:
If you do find lice, you can try one of the "home re-
medies" rather than the toxic (and increasingly in-
effective) medications: cover (really *cover*) the
hair with oil (olive) or mayonnaise, cover with a
shower cap, leave on for a while (the idea is to
smother the buggers), then wash out and rinse with
vinegar (which dissolves the nit glue, making them
easier to remove). The oil didn't work for us, but
I think the vinegar really helps. Also, after the
wash, use a hot hair dryer. The most important
thing, though, is to pick *all* the nits out -- but
how you can ever be sure you've got *all* of them,
I don't know! Do the whole family every time, even
if you only *see* them on one member.
If the lice resist the first treatment and you find
yourself having to treat again and again, try to
convince your kids that a buzz cut is cool! Seri-
ously, if we go through this *one more time* in
this house, I think we're going to be making a bold
fashion statement for shaved heads on girls!
