Question:
I found some more of the live monsters today so we did the Olive oil with
eucalyptus oil mix and let it set for several hours with a shower cap,Any
ideas please pass them to me ?
Answer:
Nix won't kill all the nits the little crawlies laid before you treated her.
They take up to 3 weeks to hatch -- hence, you have to remove every nit by
hand. Cut them out above the nit, place the hair in a pan of water so it
doesn't get caught in a draft & land on the carpet -- or else do it outside,
where natural light will help you find 'em. (Washing won't help -- they like
clean hair, actually, better than oily hair because the nits cling tighter to
it.)
Problem is removing every nit -- consider how many hairs on the human head, the
time amount to look at each one and remove each nit, and the amount of time a
child will sit still. We did as many as we could over the course of weeks --
but unless you shave the head (which seems pretty extreme, esp. for girls) it's
impossible to say for sure they're all gone.
The olive oil treatment smothers the live ones, but it has to be repeated to
smother any nits that may hatch since you first treated.
We saturated hair and scalp with olive oil (to the point where any more added
would just drip off), covered the head with a bandanna & covered that with the
shower cap. Kid slept in it, on our oldest linens.
Wash the glop out in the a.m. with 2 or 3 applications of a clarifying shampoo.
Repeat every third night for 21 days. That way you get even a nit that was laid
just before you Nixed 'em, but hid itself during all headchecks.
Make sure you vaccuum thoroughly (including mattresses) to suck up any stray
hairs that happen to have nits on them; soak combs/brushes in Nix, bag up
stuffed animals & quilts that can't be washed in a remote area of the house for
3 weeks. If they hatch and can't get out to hop on someone (& bite to get the
blood), they will starve to death.
Make sure you check everyone in the house for lice. Grownups aren't immune --
anyone who cuddles or co-sleeps with the kid could also be infested.
