Question:
Can anybody help me with a continuing problem of head lice. My four your
old little girl keeps on getting them . We have cut her hair shorter, keep
it tied up constantly in the company of other children. Tried the
conditioner and head lice comb , tried tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner
and also tried boiling up Quassia and spraying it on every morning. I don't
want to use chemicals on her.
Can anybody suggest a treatment which REALLY works ??
Answer:
First of all your right in not wanting to
put "chemicals on your child hair/head/skin!
And the person who responded saying you've
already put chemicals on her hair did'nt help!
Yes! everything we use and eat is made up of
different "chemicals" But, generally when someone
says they don't want to use chemicals on their
child it's "toxic" chemicals!
Lice shampoo's are made up of various
ingredients, one of which is a pediculicide! This
is also toxic to humans, that's why they tell
pregnant women not to use them! And that's also
why they tell you to use gloves when you use them
so your skin won't be exposed for too long! But
it's o.k. to pour it on your kids head! NO IT IS
NOT!
At one time they said it was safe to put DDT
powder on your kids head too!
Now, in defense of the shampoo's they use small
amounts of these TOXIC CHEMICALS,but the problem
is you have to use them more than once and
sometimes repeatedly until you find one that
works!
In my opinion one probably doesn't work much
better than the other! You have to GET ALL THE
NITS OUT! AND CLEAN THOROUGHLY FOR WEEKS TO MAKE
SURE THEIR GONE!!! It's the only way!
Now, there are also lots of safer alternatives,
mayonaise, vaseline, oils etc. hard to wash out
and you still have to be thorough!
Here's one that works well and can be used on
the whole family at the same time(even if you
don't see anything on that person) Timing is
important everyone at the same time and a mayjor
thorough cleaning of everthing house, the couch,
bedding ,combs, hair bands, bike helmets, cars
seats, the car etc..etc.. etc..
What you do is put "DIPPITY-DO" hair styling
gel on everyone's head! Make sure to completely
saturate the scalp and hair then cover it with a
shower cap and leave it in overnight!(8-12 hours)
Wash it out in the morning and pick out any dead
lice, then nit pick for hours a day in full sun
light or a 100 whatt bulb light! Then the
bedding has to be changed and washed everyday,
for weeks, at least 1-2. After 7-10 days do
the "dippity-do" again or sooner if you see live
lice again! It isn't a pesticide so it does'nt
matter how many times you use it! Of course it's
probably not a good idea to have it on your head
all the time though! They say a equall parts
vinegar& water rinse helps to loosen the nits
but, I'm not sure how helpful that is!
Part of the problem is people just don't know
how to treat this properly so they have'nt gotten
rid of it completely, then they see it again a
few weeks later and think they've picked it up
again, when infact they have'nt completely gotten
rid of it!
It's very tiring and you have to be thorough!
Hope this helps!
One more tip use extra hold dippity-do so it
does'nt leak all over the pillow at night! And
make sure you use alot about a bottle a person
depending on the length of hair!
