Nutrition: New armament against head lice found in garlic
By Frank Bushe
BUENOS AIRES - There may soon be a new treatment for head lice, say a team of
Argentine scientists.
In an interview with the newspaper Clarin, Dr. Juan JosÉ Barboza said he and
his colleagues from the University of Cuyo in Mendoza have discovered the
chemical compound that gives garlic its characteristic pungent odour is also a
very effective anti-louse remedy.
The doctors made their discovery after being approached by a local organic
farmer who was looking for a natural method of protecting his crops from pests.
Knowing that garlic has a history of being grown alongside other plants to help
keep them insect-free, they investigated its active ingredients, especially the
compound allicin. They found allicin asphyxiated many common pests, especially
plant lice.
The researchers then mixed the compound into a mint-scented cream to use on
people suffering from head lice. Its efficacy was put to the test at the
university's day-care centre, where there was a severe outbreak of the
infestation.
After one application, there was a 96% reduction in the number of pests within
seven days.
