Question:
I have used a "purchased" salt remedy that turned out to be almost pure table
salt, just enough water added to allow it to become a paste. I want to warn
any parent that is thinking of using this, yes it will work, but rather then
the "mild stinging" listed as a possiblity, that on my girls it rather BURNED
LIKE HELL. So, if you wish, go ahead and try it, I know that when the
medication doesn't work, some of us would try anything, but please be prepared,
because on a young child, once it starts burning, then it is hard to hold them
still and get it out of their hair without getting it in their eyes. I put it
on my hair to see if it was really burning, and the only thing I can compare it
too is using a hair dye or perm when you have a hidden zit or sore you didn't
notice, and having that start burning like fire, except it is the whole head
that burns. any ideas?

I do understand that you are not talking about the method I suggest, but
about some similar method that you bought. Having said that, I would like to
offer a few words about the treatment method that I offer as a gift.
I would never, ever, offer a remedy that caused discomfort or danger to the
child on the receiving end of the treatment. I cannot speak for the remedy
that you tried, but I can say that I have had not a single person mail me
and say that the treatment I suggest caused such an effect. Before I ever
put this mixture on my childrens heads, I put on my own. I then sat around
for two hours before showering off. The only thing I noted was a slight
scalp dryness which was gone the next day. After this test I put a small
amount behind the ears of my girls and left it for the same time. Rinsing
off and a close inspection showed not even the slightest blush of
irritation. I then started a full treatment and "promoted" a persistant
bunch of lice to glory. Kids will always be grumpy about treatments of any
kind, and mine were no exception. However, at no time during or after the
treatment were any ill effects noted. And beleive me, I was looking.
Despite this total lack of any adverse reaction, I went to some trouble on
my web pages to remind parents that, as with any topically applied
medication, a small test is prudent. I also warn parents, that if a scalp
has been well scratched, there may well be a reaction to a strong salt
solution and to take the appropriate action depending on the size of the
exposed area. All these areas and much more are coverd in the FAQ page on my
web site.
Knowing just how difficult it can be to rid ones family of these pests, it
would be a great shame if people were to close their minds to one
treatment, solely based on the report of a similar treatment causing the
major discomfort that you write about. In your position, I would be
considering taking the matter up with the manufacturer in case the effect is
more widely spread.
