Question:
Can anybody help me with a continuing problem of head lice. My four your
old little girl keeps on getting them . We have cut her hair shorter, keep
it tied up constantly in the company of other children. Tried the
conditioner and head lice comb , tried tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner
and also tried boiling up Quassia and spraying it on every morning. I don't
want to use chemicals on her.
Answer:
My little girl had the same problem: she contracted head lice from her
cousin who chronically has an infestation. I ended up having to give my
daughter 4 treatments. I found that the Nix brand conditioner did not work, so
I tried the WalMart Equate brand lice shampoo, which finally did the trick with
2 applications, 1 week apart. The secret is to use the nit comb right after
shampooing, and then EVERY day for 5 days to a week. I spent about an hour a
day doing nothing but picking nits out of her hair. It's these pesky little
buggers that you have to worry about, not the adult lice, which are killed with
the shampoo. If the nit comb isn't doing a sufficient job of removing the nits,
what I did was isolate the strand of hair that had the nit(s) on it and cut it
off with scissors. It was alot of fun, I tell you. If you notice the package
insert, it tells you to remove the nits daily. I thought that all you had to do
was shampoo the hair, run a nit comb through it, and then repeat it a week or so
later (and that is what most people do according to the directions on the box).
But, with my experience, this is a bunch of hogwash. The companies that
advertise "Gets rid of lice with just one dose" are very misleading and should
not be able to claim this. There's more work involved than just a shampoo or
two
