Question:
This is slightly embarrassing. Can any one recommend a treatment for
headlice? There has been yet another outbreak at my daughters school and
this time she has caught them. I have been told not to waste my money on
chemical treatments as they have grown immune to the chemicals most commonly
used at the moment. I also tried putting loads of conditioner in her hair
and trying to comb out the lice, but we are still left with the eggs. They
of course hatch and grow into lice, which lay eggs. A never ending circle.
So I was wondering if someone could advise me on any oils that may be able
to help. I was told a couple of drops of tea tree oil in the final rinse of
her hair will help prevent them but I wasn't told this until after she had
them.
Answer:
I've used 10% tea tree in alcohol; the biggest chore is the initial soak
with the 4-oil cocktail (my combination was eucalyptus, fennel, geranium and
lavender - I think) and the 'wet-comb' through afterwards to remove lice,
eggs & nits. The tea tree lotion I used for the follow-up treatments (just
rubbing into the scalp, the alcohol means the hair doesn't need washing
every time) with comb-through, every other day for a week. Young daughter
had them once; and despite a new outbreak recently, we haven't suffered
reinfection. Having said that, I think I'll check her scalp again tomorrow.
