Non-toxic head lice treatment for children?

Question:
My kindergartner came home today with a note saying she has head lice. Is there a non-toxic way to treat it? We haven't been through this experience before, and I wanted to hear if any of you have any wisdom to share. We were told to buy Rid or Pronto. And I have the guidelines for banishing them from our household. ANY input would be appreciated

Answer:
Try http://www.ezmort.com/kids/lice-english.html for the draft misc.kids Head Lice FAQ. Any factual comments or additions to the FAQ would be welcomed.

Very briefly, the hatched lice can be suffocated with oils; oil/vinegar mixtures, such as mayonnaise, will also helps loosen the nits. Be very careful about suggested "natural" insecticides, which may be more toxic than Rid.

And as a netter recently mentioned, shaving the heads of the entire family will also work.
