Question:
OMG this is all i need right now! UGH! I think Lex may have got head
lice from daycare! Her head has been itching and i started looking and
she only has a couple but they LOOK like lice to me. But they are
easily coming over her hair. I thought they are hard to get off. What
else could this be if it's not lice? Some web sites say you should do
nothing! Are there any natural ways to get rid of them? Can i just
take lex to the beauty shop and can they get rid of them? Im not sure
that's what these are though. Someone help!
Answer:
Take her to the daycare and have someone there check her head. I work in a
daycare/private school, and we check all heads every Monday. I think most
states require that at least some staff members be trained in the
recognition of communicable diseases (lice qualifies as a communicable
disease), so someone there should be able to tell if they are head lice. If
it is, do not take her to the beauty shop...they will not treat head
lice...you'll have to do it at home. Everyone in the house will have to be
treated, as well as all linens, clothes, towels, etc. be washed in hot
water. Any stuffed animals or items that can't be washed should be tied up
(air tight) in plastic bags for at least 10 days. Carpets and furniture
should also be treated (they make various sprays for it), and all brushes &
combs should be boiled for 10 minutes. I know this seems like a lot to do,
and it is, but trust me...I've seen it a thousand times. Parents will just
shampoo the kid's hair and 2 weeks later the nits hatch and they have it
again...or they don't treat the carpet and the kids reinfest themselves. If
you treat it correctly the first time, you shouldn't have to treat it again.
BTW...when you treat her hair, make sure you use the tiny comb that comes
with the lice shampoo and be careful to remove each nit (egg). The shampoo
is supposed to kill them, but you have to comb them out by hand. If you
miss one, and happened to survive the shampoo....2 weeks later you'll have
to do it again. I hope it is something else, because lice are a PITA to get
rid of, but it can be done...good luck!
